How it works

Every regional market is fitted to the rule fee = A × participantsB, estimated on the median. Dispersion around that curve is proportional rather than additive, which is what lets one percentile ladder apply at any participant count. Where a regional market has too few disclosed fees to fit on its own, the calculator falls back to the national curve for that plan type and says so.

Source: Department of Labor Form 5500 Schedule H, engagements where the independent qualified public accountant disclosed a fee. Plans below 100 participants are excluded, since an audit is generally not required and the curve is outside its fitted range.
